Are you looking to buy a storage container for your business? You might be hoping to add a storage container or two to your business operations for extra storage outside of your normal facilities.

This is a smart way to add storage areas without building a new facility. Wondering if you need to buy a new storage container? Or can you get away with buying a used one to save money?

Purchasing a used unit is economical. But what should you consider when thinking about buying used storage containers

Read on to learn about the considerations you should look at when purchasing a storage container in Texas.

Potential Damage

When you purchase a new unit, you should expect there to be no damage. That’s one of the advantages of a new unit.

However, if you are considering a used unit, study the outside of the unit carefully. Look for damage. There’s a difference between real damage and superficial scrapes and dents. A used unit is bound to have some scrapes and dents. Any unit on a job site will acquire them. As long as those don’t take away from the structural security of the unit, you will be fine.

Look at the Doors

Look closely at the doors to the unit. The security of the storage container should be important to you. You want the unit to seal properly so it can work as storage and remain water safe.

On a shipping container, there’s something called a door gasket. The door gasket is usually a rubber seal. It’s what seals the container walls and the container door. The door gasket needs to be in good condition so the door will seal effectively and prevent water from entering the container.

Look also at the rivets that hold the door gaskets in place. If they look worn or rusted, that could also be a sign they won’t last much longer.

You want to ensure the doors don’t show too many signs of wear or rust.

Interior Flooring

Interior flooring can give you clues about the condition of the unit. On the interior, the floor should feel secure. If it appears warped or damaged, this may be a sign of moisture coming into the storage container. Likewise, a spongy floor is probably showing some signs of rot and should be passed by.

Outside of the unit, there are steel cross members. These should be in sound condition. It allows the used storage container to be lifted with a forklift and moved as needed.

Roof

New container units are not likely to have any potential weaknesses with the roofing that a used unit might have. The condition of the container roof is key to preventing water from seeping into the unit. The older the unit, the more concerned you should be about the roof.

Look for large patterns of rust or tiny pinhole openings in the steel that could allow water to get inside.
